How to Use Vintage Photos as Map Markers

I like this map of Old Photos of Brooklyn. The map displays categorised historical photos of the New York City borough in the location that the pictures were shot.

The map reminds me a little of the Portsmouth History Picture Map, in its use of photos for the actual map markers. The designer of the Portsmouth map, Emily Bennett, has written up a tutorial on how she created that map.

Getting Creative with the Google Maps API covers a number of interesting steps in creating a custom Google Map, including custom map colors, menus, image overlays, responsive design, code optimization and validation. The tutorial also explains how to use your own images as map markers. The tutorial shows how to use .png images with transparent backgrounds and how to set the clickable area of the png so that only the visible part of the image responds to a user mouse-click.
